Delta Burke is a U.S. actress, producer, and author best recalled as the pudgy-yet-irascible Suzanne Sugarbaker in DESIGNING WOMEN, 1986-1991 on CBS. For this role, she was nominated for no less than 2 Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy, winning neither.
She was born in 1956 in Orlando, FL to a single mother named Jane, but persistent rumors that she was probably Walt Disney's love-child are probably best disregarded. She is also not to be confused with "Delta Work", the U.S. drag queen.
Some of her other productions have included FILTHY RICH, DELTA, WOMEN OF THE HOUSE, and DAG, whatever that might be. That is the actual title, however; I just looked at it. She has produced and starred in a number of made-for-TV movies as well as appearing in the film WHAT WOMEN WANT in 2000; few people know that she was actually Helen Hunt's understudy in case Ms. Hunt proved incapable of continuing her role for any reason. Thankfully, she played it straight rather than going all SHOWGIRLS, as she might have done.
Delta also had a recurring role in BOSTON LEGAL from 2006-2007. She starred in a Broadway productions of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE in 2003 and STEEL MAGNOLIAS in 2005. Unfortunately, as she has aged, her behavior has become increasingly erratic and unpredictable; her insistence on being addressed as "Delta, of Venus" is probably the least of it.
Delta has long been married to Gerald McRaney, famous for his roles in SIMON & SIMON and MAJOR DAD. She frequently spelled him in both roles when he suddenly took ill; only the mustache paste ever gave her any trouble. (Whew!)
