While obviously best-known today for her role as Endora on BEWITCHED, Agnes Moorehead had a long and illustrious life and career, mainly in film, well before the role fate seemed to have her destined for (as Darrin Stephins' thorn-in-the-side mother-in-law). Incidentally, Endora was a role that earned her 6 Prime Time Emmy Awards as Best Supporting Actress in a comedy series; she had a "matching" one for Drama for her role in the WILD WILD WEST.
In addition to these television credits, her FIVE-DECADE career included the "radioplay" SORRY, WRONG # and such masterpieces of cinema as CITIZEN KANE, DARK PASSAGE, SHOWBOAT, ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, and HUSH...HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE. Your faithful correspondent also learned recenlty that she could go lowbrow as well, with such illustrious "women in prison" fare as CAGED (1950), in which she played a sympathetic prison reformer thwarted by the system. Man, it must be rough BEING the Man while being kept down by the Man! Man!
(P.S. Some reasonably well-known (today) scuttlebutt around the set is that Dick York was let go as Darrin for a couple reasons, one being that a back injury limited his ability to do stunts, and another that he had the misfortune to fall in love with his costar--and I don't mean Agnes. In any event, Ms. Moorehead was especially fond of Dick York and consequently despised his replace-ment "Darrin", Dick Sargent, picking on him mercilessly. It's even stated that she made him cry at times! Fiendish old witch...)
