About Alice Wilkie
Alice Wilkie is the daughter of Thomas Wilkie, a grocery store owner in England. Alice moved to New York and joined George White's Scandals in 1923 where she remained for three seasons, 1924, 1925 and 1926. She appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies in 1925. She created a company called Alice Wilke Inc to produce her own musicals. After briefly performing with the Ringling Brothers circus in 1927, she retired from show business.
She married pharmaceutical executive Robert Turner Browning (1904–1969), and they moved to Short Hills, New Jersey and remained married until Robert's death in 1969. Alice then moved into a household retirement home in New Jersey where she spent her final years. On August 30, 1987, she died at the age of eighty-four. She is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, Virginia.
Alice Wilkie was photographed by James Montgomery Flagg and Alfred Cheney Johnston who worked for Florenz Ziegfeld for over 15 years, primarily taking advertising and promotional photographs of the Ziegfeld Follies performers. The nude photos, discovered after Johnston's death, were not published until the 1920s.
