About Gretchen Whitmer
Gretchen Esther Whitmer is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 49th governor of Michigan since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
Whitmer's political career began in 2000 when she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. In 2006, she won a special election to the state senate, serving in that chamber until 2015.
On October 8, 2020, a federal indictment against six men associated with the Wolverine Watchmen, a Michigan-based militia group, was unsealed. The indictment charges the men with plotting to kidnap Whitmer and violently overthrow Michigan's government. In April 2022, two men (Harris and Caserta) were acquitted on all charges on grounds of entrapment by FBI federal authorities. Defense attorneys argued that at least twelve informants and/or undercover agents for the FBI were embedded among the suspected planners. The FBI has acknowledged using three informants and two undercover agents in their investigation.
Whitmer is of English and German descent. As of December 2024, she has amassed 107 thousand Instagram followers.
