Initially pursuing a career in law, Bellucci began modeling while attending the University of Perugia. In 1988, she joined Elite Model Management, and in 1990, she made her television acting debut. Although many of her early films were Italian productions, she has since appeared in numerous international projects, including her role as Persephone in the Matrix series.

Bellucci has not shied away from on-screen nudity. For example, in Malèna (2000), a fantasy sequence in which a young male actor strips her character completely naked was cut from the U.S. release. However, the original version remains uncut.
