She graduated in law from the Instituto Cenecista de Ensino Superior de Santo Ângelo and in journalism from Faculdades Integradas Alcântara Machado (FIAM) in São Paulo .

Gaúcha , she was elected Miss Brazil 1999, in a ceremony held in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In second place was Rio's Paula Carvalho and, in third, Alessandra do Nascimento from Minas Gerais. The team of five best placed completed, in fourth place Karine Bonatto from Mato Grosso and in fifth place Aline Schmidt from Santa Catarina.
At Miss Universe 1999, held in Chaguaramas (Trinidad and Tobago), on May 26, Renata failed to qualify among the 10 semifinalists. In the final classification, she finished in twelfth place. The Miss Universe title went to Botswana 's candidate, Mpule Kwelagobe. The country was participating in the contest for the first time and she was the third representative from Africa to take the crown.
In 2000, she was elected Miss University World, in a contest held in Seoul, South Korea.
