Growing up as a triplet (with one of her siblings tragically passing away), she was raised by her single mother in Toronto, Canada, after the family moved there. Wakelin attended Etobicoke School of the Arts and later went to McMaster University. Despite her shy, introverted nature, she pursued modeling after seeing a Playboy advertisement in her final year of school.

Her path to fame began when she auditioned for Playboy's "Millennium Playmate" search in 1998, a decision she had the full support of her mother for. After a successful test shoot, she was selected as Playmate of the Month. Wakelin's stunning look, including her appearance in a Canadian Playboy issue wearing a hockey jersey, made her popular, with the issue selling out rapidly across Canada. In addition to her Playmate title, she appeared in various Playboy videos and graced the cover of the magazine in multiple countries, including Greece, Italy, and Poland.
