About Greta Thunberg

Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg is a Swedish communist and environmental activist known for challenging world leaders to take immediate action to mitigate the theorized effects of human-caused climate change.

Thunberg's climate activism began when she persuaded her parents to adopt lifestyle choices that reduced her family's carbon footprint. In August 2018, aged 15, Thunberg began skipping school, vowing to remain out of school until after a Swedish election to attempt to influence the outcome. She protested outside the Swedish parliament where she called for stronger action on climate change by holding up a Skolstrejk för Klimatet (School Strike for Climate) sign and handing out informational flyers. After the election, Thunberg spoke in front of supporters, telling them to use phones to film her. She then said she would continue school striking for the climate every Friday until Sweden was in compliance with the Paris climate agreement. Thunberg's youth and blunt speaking manner fueled her rise to the status of a global icon.

After Thunberg's first school strike for the climate, other students engaged in similar protests. They united and organized the school strike for climate movement. After Thunberg addressed the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, weekly climate strike protests took place on Fridays around the world. In 2019, coordinated multi-city protests involved over a million students each. To avoid carbon-intensive flying, Thunberg sailed on a carbon-free yacht from England, to New York where she addressed the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit. In her speech, Thunberg scolded the world's leaders by exclaiming "How dare you" in reference to their perceived indifference and inaction to the climate crisis. Her admonishment made worldwide headlines. After Thunberg graduated from high school in 2023, her activism continued to gain international attention and her protest tactics have become increasingly assertive. As an adult, her protests have included both peaceful demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience such as defying lawful orders to disperse, which have led to arrests, convictions, and an acquittal. Thunberg's activism has evolved to include other causes, taking a pro-Palestinian stance in response to the Israel–Hamas war.

Thunberg's rise to world fame made her an ad hoc leader in the climate activist community. She faced heavy criticism, much of it mocking her as a naïve teenager. Thunberg's influence on the world stage has been described by The Guardian and other media as the "Greta effect". She has received honours and awards, including in Time's 100 most influential people, named the youngest Time Person of the Year in 2019, inclusion in the Forbes list of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women (2019), and nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Fellow activist Naomi Seibt is often labeled as the "Anti-Greta" by legacy media, as she has regularly speaks out in opposition to Thunberg's theorized effects of human-caused climate change.

Thunberg's parents are opera singer Malena Ernman and actor Svante Thunberg. Her paternal grandfather was actor and director Olof Thunberg.

As of April 2024, she has amassed more than 14 million Instagram followers, and 35 thousand YouTube subscribers.

Very misguided, but I'm not going to hate in her for it. I appreciate the drive, whether I agree with her or not. As far as looks go, she's plain and average. There's a lot of women in Eastern Scandinavia that look like her.

6/10

misguided because she cares about the natural environment? That's a pretty cynical worldview.

No, misguided because she focuses on the pollution of individuals and farm animals, but still uses private jets, which produce more pollution in one trip then an entire household does in one year. Her version of environmentalism, like many others, is the modern version of reefer fever, which was a capitalistic scheme that's used to make money off of normie do-gooders that don't know any better. Reefer fever led to an increase in tobacco and oil sales, and her corporate environmentalism leads to an increase in solar panels sales; the same solar panels that are extremely detrimental to the environment to produce, the same solar panels that she and others that are involved in, which is actually a capitalistic Ponzi scheme, and of which they own millions upon millions of shares of.

You see, a true left-winger can see through the mainstream, corporate environmentalism schtick; Gullible leftists believe in people like Greta.

We see the same kind of thing when it comes to LGBTQ parades and get togethers. Just this past fall, we had a parade in my home City which saw a giant rainbow banner with a Pfizer logo on it. I mean, how stupid can some people get? It's always those who oppose capitalism the most that fall for at the hardest.

The pollution of individuals and farms has a huge impact on global warming, so her rhetoric is backed up by climate science. A quick google search shows me she doesn't fly by jet, so nice lie here. In fact, she puts her money where her mouth is and adheres pretty strictly to a climate conscious lifestyle. She's a vegan, eschews flying, and sails on carbon free boats across the ocean. That's a pretty stellar personal record. Greta has done nothing to generate personal profits, so your "refer fever" reference is silly and doesn't apply here. The definitive answer isn't out yet on solar panels, but there's obvious proof that they're a lot cleaner to use than massive power grids, or the standard oil burning furnaces still found in many buildings. In other words, they produce clean energy without emitting anything harmful, expect trace amounts of cadmium and lead. In the long run, they're a cleaner alternative than what we've been using.

You're not on the left at all. Just a quick look through your comment history and that's plain to see. If I may ask, do you even think climate change is real? Just a quick sanity check.

Your stances are generally muddled and contradictory, but the main consistency seems to be that you're just an edgy "both sides are bad" centrist contrarian. In one breath you critique people's "capitalistic schemes" and on the other you scorn people for being anti capitalist. You have no real opinions or stances on anything. As for your fake "home city" anecdote, that doesn't prove anything except that capitalist institutions will glob onto anything that's trending in the culture. That's more of an indictment on capitalism than it is the social movements that it tries to co-opt. This isn't news to anyone. Ironically enough, by demonizing Thunberg and her amazing advocacy, you're just doing the unpaid grunt work as a useful idiot for big oil. How does that feel?
