By age 18 Julia Ann started modeling, then became a professional mud wrestler in Hollywood before becoming one half of the popular touring strip club feature act Blondage, with her then girlfriend and lover Janine Lindemulder, in the early 1990s. Their success led to their own issue of the Carnal Comics comic book title (which also published a Julia Ann solo comic, co-written by her), as well as offers to join the pornographic film industry

Julia Ann debuted in adult films in 1992 in Andrew Blake's Hidden Obsessions, in a lesbian sex scene with Lindemulder. In the 1990s, Ann and Lindemulder performed for Vivid Video. She was under contract to Wicked Pictures in 2006, but in May 2007 she posted on the members section of her website that she had not renewed her contract with Wicked.

By the 2010s, she was in her 40s and not slowing down as she was one of the most popular MILF performers in porn. She was also noted for her mature woman roles in girl/girl porn and won several awards for her scenes. By 2020 she was now her in 50s and began doing Onlyfans and Fansly with no signs of stopping her legendary adult career.

Julia Ann and Janine Lindemulder dated for several years offscreen. Although they were not exclusive and each had boyfriends during their relationship. Lindemuldler categorized it as not that serious and more of a "stripper marriage" since they toured strip clubs as an act for many years while Ann said she was in love with Janine and would have married and started a family with her if it were legal at the time.

Julia Ann is a member of the AVN Hall of Fame. Julia Ann recently tattooed her right arm with a half sleeve.

In December 2022, Julia had her breast implants removed after wearing them for 34 years and now she is all natural again.
