Lea Massari lived in Spain, France and Switzerland, where she began studying architecture in the 1950s. At the same time she worked as a model and was noticed by the set designer and costume designer Piero Gherardi. At twenty-two she began her film career playing roles as a sweet girl in love (Forbidden, 1954, by Mario Monicelli; I dreams in the drawer, 1957, by Renato Castellani) and taking on her stage name in memory of her boyfriend Leo with whom she would due to get married, but who died a few days before the wedding.
