This is highly speculative, but it's possible (perhaps not likely but still possible) that her grandfather or great-grandfather came from Germany during WW2, was a POW, managed to survive captivity (not many did), and stayed in the USSR having been indoctrinated into the Soviet mindset. This sort of thing did happen but rarely. She might also have some Ukrainian background as the Bolshevik Russians did a lot of rotten things back in the 1930s and '40s to depopulate that region and resettle thinned-out areas with Russians.
